The world of boxing and tricampeón mayor of Managua, Alexis Arguello,
was found dead on Wednesday, said that the Nicaraguan government. He
was 57 years.
Not an official cause of death, but according to various press
reports, it was a suicide. The daily La Presse reported that Arguello
had a gunshot wound to the chest.
The Sandinista Radio Ya reported that the body was found at dawn
on Wednesday and was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an
autopsy.
Argüello was elected mayor of Managua in November municipal elections.
"We are dismayed. I see the pain in your heart. He was the
champion of the poor. An example of forgiveness and reconciliation,"
said spokesperson and wife of President Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo.
"It was a spirit and a copy of our youth," he added.
Ortega Murillo reported that suspended his trip to Panama for the
inauguration of that country's new president, Ricardo Martinelli.
The former boxer was back on Sunday, Puerto Rico, where he went to
sport and to strengthen cultural ties with the authorities of the
island and pay tribute to the legend of baseball in Puerto Rico,
Roberto Clemente.
Puerto Rico played on the 28th January 1978 one of his most famous
fights against Alfredo Escalera de Puerto Rico, who won the
super-feather title of World Boxing Council with a knockout in 13
rounds.
Argüello, known as "El Flaco Explosivo" by his powerful pen and
spindly figure was champion of 1974-77, the junior lightweight between
1978-80 and 1981-83 lightness.
Argüello left the ring with 82-8 record with 65 victories on the
road quickly. In 1992, he was exalted to the Hall of Fame boxing.
In 1999, The Associated Press has been chosen as the best boxer in the history of the junior lightweight.
Last year, the boxer was the bearer of the delegation of Nicaragua in the Olympics in Beijing.
Argüello was born on 19 April 1952 in a poor neighborhood of
Managua, and ventured into boxing in 1968. On 16 February 1974, he
fought for his first world title, written by the World Boxing
Association, but dropped a unanimous decision against Ernesto Marcel of
Panama.
On 23 November the same year he won his first crown of feather
noquear to 13 laps on the Mexican Ruben Olivares in Los Angeles.
Nicaragua won his second junior lightweight championship against
the right to a bloody brawl in Bayamon, a city next to San Juan.
On 20 June 1981 won the lightweight championship in London with a unanimous decision on Britain Jim Watt.
Argüello searched twice Junior Welter title against American Aaron
Pryor, who won two nocauts brutal assault on 14 and 10 in 1982 and
1983, respectively.
Argüello hanging gloves after his second setback against Pryor,
but then returned to the ring for a fight in 1985, another in 1986,
1994 and 1995. His last fight was on 21 January 1995 in Las Vegas, a
defeat by unanimous decision against Scott Walker unknown.
Arguello fought the Sandinistas in the 1980s, but later joined the party and won election as mayor of the capital in 2008.
In one recent public events, Argüello was last Friday in Puerto
Rico and visited the city of sport that is the name of Clemente, who
died December 31, 1972 in a plane crash while bringing aid to victims
earthquake in Managua.
"Clemente was not born like any other. We will always remember him
because he gave his life for our country. Clemente is one of the links
between Nicaragua Puerto Rico," Arguello said last week .
